Ukraine War: Russia Loses 1,440 Soldiers in One Day
In the ongoing Ukraine war, Russia lost 1,440 soldiers over the past day according to the Ukrainian General Staff, bringing its total personnel losses since February 2022 to 1,468,760. [1]
Russian Personnel Losses
The Ukrainian General Staff reported that Russia has lost 1,440 soldiers killed and wounded over the past day. [1] This figure brings the cumulative total of Russian personnel losses to 1,468,760 since the start of the full-scale invasion on 24 February 2022. [1] The General Staff also listed additional equipment losses over the same 24-hour period. [1] These include two tanks, four armoured combat vehicles, 93 artillery systems, three multiple-launch rocket systems, two air defence systems, 16 ground robotic systems, 2,093 operational-tactical UAVs, three cruise missiles, 597 vehicles and fuel tankers, and five special vehicles and other equipment. [1] The information is being confirmed by Ukrainian authorities. [1]
Recruitment of African Nationals by Russia
Ukraine's Foreign Ministry has stated that at least 2,982 individuals from 37 African countries have been recruited into Russia's armed forces. [4] Of those, 486 are known to have been killed. [4] The ministry added that 35 citizens from 17 African countries are being held on Ukrainian territory as prisoners of war. [4] The highest numbers of recruits have come from Kenya, Egypt, Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda, Algeria and Mali. [4] Russian intelligence services use manipulative methods aimed at coercion and deception, including promises of civilian employment or education, high pay, Russian citizenship or other benefits. [4] In many cases, foreign nationals are forced to sign military contracts in Russian under threat of deportation or imprisonment. [4] Ukrainian diplomatic missions in African countries keep local authorities informed about the recruitment of their citizens. [4] Ukraine is also running an information campaign in countries where it maintains diplomatic missions. [4] The Foreign Ministry, in collaboration with the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, has created a specialised web resource available in English, French and Swahili that contains verified information about Russian recruitment methods, testimonies from victims, analytical materials, practical recommendations and mechanisms for reporting recruiter activity. Civilian and First Responder Casualties in Occupied Areas
A Ukrainian strike in the occupied city of Horlivka killed one civilian and wounded three others. [3] Local authorities confirmed the incident, which was reported by the Russian information agency Interfax. [3] In a follow-on attack, Ukrainian forces struck a fire brigade from the DPR Ministry of Emergency Situations that had been extinguishing a fire in one of the newly occupied settlements. [3] The drone strike injured two firefighters, who were hospitalised, and caused serious damage to specialised equipment. [3]
Foreign Mercenaries on Both Sides
Russian forces announced that the bodies of ten Colombian mercenaries who had been fighting for Ukraine in the Khartiya brigade were identified near Kupiansk. [3] The news was first reported by TASS, with additional details on South American fighters in the conflict zone published by osnmedia.ru. [3] Ukraine's Foreign Ministry separately reported that nearly 3,000 individuals from 37 African countries have been recruited into Russian forces, with 486 known deaths. [3] Foreign recruits are often lured with promises of civilian work or education before being compelled to sign military contracts in Russian. [3]

North Korean Military Support to Russia
Ukrainian statements indicate that North Korean ballistic missile forces and troops are now supporting Russian operations. [5] Ukrainian intelligence reported on 5 August that the first North Korean ballistic missile forces would deploy near Voronezh and contain 120 ballistic missiles and six launchers. [5] President Zelensky stated that 30,000 or even 50,000 additional North Korean troops and their supplies could be heading to assist Russia. [5] Zelensky further attributed the previous day's Russian missile assault on Zaporizhzhia, which killed nine people, at least partially to North Korean missile forces. [5] North Korea has already supplied Russia with artillery shells, front-line soldiers and ballistic missile forces. [5] Ukrainian officials noted that North Korean units and missiles are now participating in strikes on Ukrainian cities and civilians. [5] Zelensky highlighted in an address on 10 August that this marks the first time in Russia's history that it lacks a secure strategic rear and must rely on reinforcements from North Korea. [5]
Internal Russian Economic Repercussions
Russian state development corporation VEB.RF dismissed its chief economist Andrei Klepach after he warned that Russia is losing the economic war of attrition with the West and faces an impending social crisis. [3] The dismissal was confirmed to Vedomosti. [3] Klepach's public assessment followed his critical statements on Russia's economic trajectory amid the conflict. [3]
What to watch next: Ukrainian officials continue to monitor the deployment of additional North Korean ballistic missiles and troops, while diplomatic efforts in African countries aim to counter further recruitment into Russian forces.
