Russian Strikes Kill Seven Across Ukraine After US Envoy Meets Putin
Russian Missile and Drone Attack Kills Seven in Ukraine
Russian strikes killed seven people across Ukraine and wounded at least 15 in Kyiv on 21-22 October 2026, hours after a US envoy met with Vladimir Putin. The overnight Russian attack used Iskander-M, S-400, Zircon, Oniks missiles and over 200 drones, with Kyiv as the main target; Ukrainian air defences downed 181 drones. Fatalities occurred in Sumy (one man), Kharkiv (one woman), Zaporizhzhia (three people) and Donetsk (two people). [1] The attack began at 18:00 on 21 October, with missiles launched from Russia’s Kursk, Bryansk and Rostov oblasts. [4] Drones were launched from the Russian cities of Millerovo, Oryol, Kursk, Primorsko-Akhtarsk and Shatalovo as well as from temporarily occupied Donetsk and Hvardiiske in Crimea. [4] Hits by aerial assets were recorded at 32 locations and the fall of downed aerial assets at eight locations. [4] Aircraft, anti-aircraft missile units, electronic warfare assets, unmanned systems units and mobile fire groups from Ukraine’s defence forces were involved in repelling the attack. [4]
Damage and Injuries Reported in Kyiv
In Kyiv, strikes damaged metro infrastructure at the Pivdenny Bridge, restricted traffic and injured at least 15 according to the mayor, with separate reporting of at least six injured in residential buildings. Kyiv’s mayor Vitali Klitschko said on social media strikes had wounded 15 people in the Ukrainian capital. [1] He said the strikes had damaged metro infrastructure at the Pivdenny Bridge, which officials said had restricted traffic between parts of the city. [1] Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said Russian missiles hit several residential buildings late Wednesday, October 21, injuring at least six people. [3] Ukraine’s air force posted a warning in the early hours of “more ballistic missiles towards Kyiv” and instructed residents to stay in shelters. [1] One person was killed and 22 injured, including four children, in a Russian missile attack on the city of Kyiv on the evening and night of 21-22 October. [4]
Separate Strike Hits Chernihiv Business Premises
Russian forces have attacked premises belonging to a business in the city of Chernihiv twice, killing one person and causing another to suffer acoustic trauma. [2] A 54-year-old man has been injured and is suffering from acute acoustic trauma. Sadly, a 61-year-old man has been killed in the second strike. [2] Russian forces had attacked the city using Banderol drone-launched missiles. [2] The Russians also struck an agricultural business in Semenivka with a Geran drone overnight, setting a warehouse and outbuildings on fire. The fire has since been extinguished. [2]
Russian Defences Intercept Ukrainian Drones
Russia reported intercepting more than 630 Ukrainian drones heading toward Moscow, wounding two people near the capital and one in Lipetsk region. Moscow’s mayor Sergei Sobyanin said two people had been wounded in huge barrages of 630 drones fired towards the region, 163 of which were approaching the Russian capital. [1] The governor of nearby Tula region said Russian air defences had destroyed 70 drones. [1] Another man was wounded in the Lipetsk region, its governor said. [1] Russia said it had intercepted more than 630 drones heading towards Moscow overnight. [3] Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said two people were injured outside the Russian capital during the drone attacks. [3]
US Envoy Meets Putin Amid Ongoing Attacks
The strikes followed US envoy Steve Witkoff’s meeting with Putin in St Petersburg, after Witkoff met Zelensky in Oslo; Trump described the talks as bringing the sides “maybe now the closest we’ve been” to ending the war. [1] Witkoff had flown to Russia from a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Oslo on Tuesday. [1] US special envoy Steve Witkoff met Russian President Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg on Wednesday, a day after meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Oslo. [3] Trump sought to strike an optimistic tone after US envoy Steve Witkoff’s meeting with Putin on Wednesday, saying negotiators were “maybe now the closest we’ve been” to ending the war. [1] The Kremlin indicated it was “in principle” open to the resumption of trilateral talks involving the two sides and the United States. [1] Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters that Russia was “in principle, ready to resume” trilateral talks in mid-November — after the US midterm elections — and that the Kremlin wanted them to focus on post-war security. [1] Zelensky said Ukraine also backed resuming trilateral talks. [1] Before travelling to Russia, Witkoff met Zelenskyy and the leaders of Norway and Finland in Oslo. [3] Zelenskyy said the discussions included strong security guarantees for Ukraine and a proposal for a ceasefire targeting attacks on energy infrastructure. [3]
Broader Background on Peace Efforts
Trump returned to power in January 2025 promising to end the war in 24 hours — but more than a year of US-led talks have failed to produce a breakthrough. [1] In recent days, a frustrated Trump has once again pivoted away from Ukraine and back to Putin, trumpeting what he said was a deal for Russia to sell diesel and reduce prices sent soaring by his Iran war. [1] Trump also delayed the imposition of sanctions on Russia’s war machine — a decision he defended on Wednesday as necessary to secure Hubbard’s release. [1] “If you would’ve put those sanctions on… you could forget about him. You’d never see him again,” Trump told reporters at the White House. [1] Witkoff told Putin Washington was “grateful” for the diesel deal, which sparked outrage in Kyiv and across Europe. [1] The war, Europe’s worst since World War II, has killed tens of thousands of people since Russia’s February 2022 invasion. [1] Putin has consistently rejected face-to-face talks with Zelensky and insisted Moscow intends to seize the rest of east Ukraine. [1] Trilateral negotiations involving Russia, Ukraine and the United States stalled in February. [3] Since then, Russia has intensified its attacks, while Ukraine has faced pressure on its air-defence capabilities as supplies of Western-provided interceptor missiles have come under strain. [3]
What to watch next: Discussions would continue between the United States, Ukraine and Russia at the technical level. [1] A summit between Putin, Trump and China’s Xi Jinping was also being prepared in China’s Shenzhen for next month. [1]
