Russian Missiles and Drones Kill 2 and Injure 10 in Overnight Attack on Kyiv
Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone attack on Kyiv overnight on 7-8 September, killing two people, injuring at least 10 and damaging residential buildings, warehouses, a school, a clinic, a metro station entrance and other civilian infrastructure after a three-day pause in strikes expired.
Attack Ends Three-Day Pause After U.S. Envoys’ Visit
The attack came hours after a three-day pause in Russian strikes on Kyiv expired, ending a temporary suspension announced during the visit of U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Moscow and Kyiv. [1] [5] The renewed assault followed the expiration of the three-day suspension announced on September 6 during the diplomatic mission of the envoys. [1] Ukrainian authorities described the attack as the first targeting Kyiv in the last three nights after the moratorium. [5] Ukraine has repeatedly accused Russia of using temporary pauses for political messaging while continuing preparations for further attacks. [1] The latest strike has fueled doubts about prospects for a sustained ceasefire despite renewed diplomatic contacts. [1] Steve Witkoff estimated that the tour permitted substantial progress toward organizing tripartite talks to end the conflict. [5] Vladimir Putin decreed a cessation of attacks on Kyiv for three days from Saturday to Monday inclusive during the envoys’ visit, while Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a halt to attacks targeting Moscow in the same period. Casualties and Injuries Reported Across Kyiv
Two people were killed and 10 Kyiv residents were injured in the attack. [2] [3] The highest number of casualties, including both fatalities, occurred in the Solomianskyi district. [3] Eight people aged between 22 and 65 were injured in the Solomianskyi district, with doctors diagnosing cuts and shrapnel wounds as well as injuries to the face, neck, torso and limbs. [3] A 29-year-old foreign national was injured in the Darnytskyi district. [3] Five of the injured were taken to hospital, two of whom are in a serious condition. [2] People were trapped in their apartments in a residential building in the Holosiivskyi district after debris fell, and people were also trapped in a five-story residential building in the Solomianskyi district. Damage to Civilian Infrastructure in Seven Districts
Damage and falling debris were recorded in the Shevchenkivskyi, Holosiivskyi, Darnytskyi, Obolonskyi, Podilskyi, Solomianskyi and Dniprovskyi districts of the capital. [3] At least 14 apartment blocks, an accommodation centre, a school, a clinic, 25 cars, a supermarket, a petrol station and warehouses were damaged. [3] Warehouse fires broke out in the Shevchenkivskyi, Darnytskyi, Podilskyi and Holosiivskyi districts due to falling debris. Scale of Russian Missile and Drone Barrage
Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia fired at least 12 ballistic missiles at Kyiv within roughly an hour, alongside drones targeting several districts of the capital. [1] Ukrainian forces shot down and suppressed two ballistic missiles, 31 cruise missiles and 142 drones. [4] Hits were recorded in 29 locations. [4] Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the attack was complex and appeared deliberately designed to cause maximum damage, involving ballistic and cruise missiles, anti-ship missiles and Shahed drones. [4] Air defense systems intercepted a number of incoming missiles and drones, but debris and explosions caused fires and significant damage in multiple neighborhoods. Strikes Hit Other Ukrainian Regions
The main targets of the overnight attack were Kyiv and the southern Odesa region. [4] Strikes also hit critical infrastructure in several other regions. [4] In Odesa, a regular market was hit. [4] In Kharkiv, two people were injured and a multistory building was damaged. [4] In the Sumy region, a train locomotive operating on the Kyiv-Sumy route was attacked at a railway station. Emergency Response and Ongoing Assessment
Emergency crews responded to fires in residential buildings and public facilities while authorities reported damage to a school and several apartment blocks. [1] Emergency services and law enforcement officers are working at the sites where missiles and UAVs have struck and where debris has fallen. [3] The State Emergency Service said damage and fires occurred in at least five districts of the capital. [4] Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that debris fell at several locations in the Holosiivskyi district. [3] Kyiv resident Iryna Barisenkova, 61, said she heard explosions while traveling on public transport and was told there was a large fire near the Darnytskyi Vehicle Repair Plant area.
