[2] Video footage shared online appeared to show a high-speed drone smashing into the National Academy of Sciences at a sharp angle exploding and sending acrid smoke into the blue sky above. [2] People were seen leaning out of windows as bright orange flames engulfed part of the building. [2] Ukraine's former national security and defence council secretary Volodymyr Gorbulin told state broadcaster Suspilne that he was at work at the academy at the time and was slightly wounded. [2] But he said his assistant who was near the building was killed. [2] The National Academy of Sciences is close to the German embassy a cathedral the national opera and government buildings. [2] Kyiv cultural sites government buildings and schools have all been targeted before according to Ukrainian authorities. Russian strikes killed four and wounded at least 19 at a business centre in the central city of Dnipro while authorities reported an unspecified number of fatalities in a strike on a residential area in eastern Kharkiv. [2] Prime Minister Sergiy Koretsky said Russian forces damaged an ice cream factory in the Zhytomyr region west of Kyiv and residential buildings in Sumy in the north Rivne in the northwest and southern Odesa. Kremlin Justification for Continued Strikes
The Kremlin said on Monday that Ukraine was paying the price for its own attacks on Russia in recent months and would continue to do so as Moscow's forces systematically strike different targets there. [5] Russian Defence Ministry confirmed attacks on data centres in Kyiv that provide mobile telephony and internet services to the Ukrainian army. [1] It was also reported that logistics centres and a ship with supplies for the Ukrainian army were attacked in the Odesa region. [1] The Kremlin stated that Ukraine is paying the price for its recent drone attacks on Russia and will continue to do so as Russian forces conduct their special military operation. [1] Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that Moscow was ready to continue negotiations with Kyiv after the September parliamentary elections in Russia but expressed dissatisfaction with the extensive Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow during the elections and the June attack on St Petersburg when an economic forum was taking place there. Governor of southern Ukraine's Kherson region Oleksandr Prokudin reported on Sunday that the Ukrainian army delivered food and medicine by drones to the city of Oleshky which has been occupied by Russian forces since the beginning of the war in 2022 while officials warn of an increasingly severe humanitarian crisis. [1] According to Prokudin in the latest such operation heavy transport drones simultaneously delivered approximately four tons of food and medical supplies to one hundred locations across the city which is located on the left bank of the Dnieper River. [1] As he said nearly two thousand people including about 50 children are trapped as hostages in the city without food electricity and water. [1] He accused Russian forces of preventing residents from escaping the city. [1] The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine reported that residents have been suffering from food shortages for several months and have extremely limited access to basic necessities. [1] The Kremlin last week acknowledged that Oleshky is facing serious problems with food and medicine supplies but asserted that the Russian army is working to resolve these issues. [1] The Ukrainian army has again seized some territory in the north of Donetsk region that was controlled by Russian forces in an operation aimed at hindering Russian advances towards key Ukrainian strongholds in the east of the country. [1] The Ukrainian Third Army Corps has recaptured an area of 51 square kilometres its commander Andriy Biletsky who has been leading operations in the area since last month said. [1] According to him the operation named Vivaldi has so far resulted in a total of 176 square kilometres of territory recaptured in the north of Donetsk region the liberation of three villages and the re-establishment of Ukrainian control over two more settlements. [1] The Institute for the Study of War based in Washington assesses that the operation has achieved an operationally significant goal as it represents an obstacle to Russian efforts for a large-scale encirclement manoeuvre around the belt of fortified Ukrainian cities. [1] Although overall Russian advances on the front have slowed this year Russian forces continue to press on these cities from the south and penetrate deeper into the eastern city of Kostyantynivka. [1] Donetsk region thus continues to be the scene of the worst fighting in the war. [1] If the mentioned successes of the Ukrainian forces are confirmed this would mean that Kyiv has recaptured more than 700 square kilometres of territory after several months of counteroffensive.
