Iran Tensions Escalate as Trump Launches Most Crushing Economic Operation
Amid escalating Iran tensions, President Donald Trump announced the launch of what he called the most crushing economic operation ever against Iran, describing it as an "Economic D-Day" and warning any nation providing aid to Tehran will face tremendous economic consequences. [1]
Trump Announces Economic D-Day Against Iran
President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to any nation thinking about offering a lifeline to Iran after announcing the launch of a U.S. operation he likened to an "economic D-Day." [1] "Today, I am announcing the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY! This will be Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale," Trump wrote on Truth Social. [1] "I am also announcing that ANY country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will itself face TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences." [1] Trump continued that oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries and front companies all need to stop now. [2] He stated that this will be an ECONOMIC D-DAY and that all allies need to stand with the United States to isolate and defeat the Iran threat. [1] Trump added that these HISTORIC MEASURES will cripple Iran and its ability to project terror worldwide. [2]
Iran's Dire Condition According to Trump
Trump stated that Iran's navy and air force are destroyed, while their production facilities have all been reduced to rubble. [1] The president added that Tehran's currency is worthless and the country as a whole is hanging by a thread. [1] He described Iran as maniacs who were on the ropes. [2] Trump also stated that IRAN WILL NEVER HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON. [2] The announcement came amid a pressure campaign from Washington, including a naval blockade, to get Iran to capitulate. [1]
UAE Cuts All Ties With Iran
The United Arab Emirates severed all financial and economic ties with Iran after Iranian missile strikes killed three and wounded 58 in the country. [1] The UAE, a close U.S. ally and regional power, made the decision citing a military escalation by Tehran with incoming missile fire. [1] Iran has attacked its neighbors in similar fashion in the months since the war began. [1]
Secret U.S. Oil Corridor Through Hormuz
The U.S. military has created a secret shipping corridor along Oman's coast allowing 10 million barrels of oil per day to transit the Strait of Hormuz, roughly half pre-war volume. [4] The US has established a shipping corridor through the strait, covertly facilitating the transport of millions of barrels of oil daily. [4] During the course of the operation 15 to 20 tankers safely transited the strait, travelling along a southern channel across the coast of Oman. [4] The operation has been underway for several weeks. [4] Trump told reporters the Strait is open and a lot of boats are coming through. [4] He added that the price of oil is decreasing again, saying they were talking about $350 a barrel, but today it's $84-$85. [4]
U.S. Naval Strain in Prolonged Conflict
Reported conditions on the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier during its record-breaking deployment have sparked debate over how the administration is handling the US-Israeli war with Iran. [3] The conflict has entered a grinding stalemate and shown no signs of a more complete cessation after nearly six months. [3] Experts said the situation has underscored the limits of US naval might amid the conflict. [3] The reported conditions on board the USS Lincoln have related to crew morale, shortages of basic supplies, and maintenance issues. [3] The USS Lincoln has been deployed since November 2025, during which time it broke the naval record for the longest period without a port stop. [3] A US military official said the navy has been forced to use the Indian Ocean island of Diego Garcia as its main supply hub, located about 3,540km away from where the USS Lincoln and a second aircraft carrier have been operating near Iran. [3] Acting US Navy Secretary Hung Cao announced the aircraft carrier would soon return home. [3] In its place, the USS George Washington, which has been primarily based in Japan, began travelling from the western Pacific to the Middle East. [3] The shift leaves no aircraft carrier in the western Pacific region. [3]
Domestic Impact on Trump's Approval Amid Iran Tensions
Trump's approval rating has fallen to 33 percent amid the ongoing Iran war, with 80 percent of Americans expecting the conflict to last an extended period and national gas prices rising above $4 per gallon. [5] Only 33% of those surveyed in a new Reuters/Ipsos poll approve of the president's job in the White House. [5] The rating is down from 35% last week. [5] A survey of 1,166 respondents showed that 64% disapproved of Trump's job performance. [5] Eighty percent of survey respondents said they expect the war in Iran will go on for an extended period of time. [5] Since the war began, national average gas prices have jumped from just under $3 per gallon to just over $4 per gallon, according to American Automobile Association data. [5] Inflation has also spiked since the beginning of the war. [5] According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, year-over-year inflation in February was 2.4%. That number now sits at 3.4%. [5]
What to watch next: The USS George Washington is travelling from the western Pacific to the Middle East while the navy has not yet announced plans to replace it in the western Pacific region.
