Storm Track and Intensity
Champi was once a super typhoon and one of the strongest storms in the Pacific this year but has weakened with gusts near its centre of 126 kmh and recorded gusts up to 227 kmh along Taiwan's coast. [1] The storm glanced off Taiwan's northeastern coast in Yilan County made a rare loop offshore and is forecast to track up the Chinese coast toward southern Japan without making landfall on the mainland. [1] The storm was about 150km east of Taiwan having glanced off the island's northeastern coast in Yilan County early on Saturday. [1] The centre of the storm turned south around midnight hugging the Yilan coastline before making a rare loop offshore and moving northward away triggering gusts of about 227kmh in some coastal areas knocking down power lines and sending roof tiles flying. [1] The storm's forecast track shows it turning north tracking up the Chinese coast and eventually moving into southern Japan. [1] Updates from the hurricane tracker indicate continued weakening as Champi heads away from Taiwan. [1]
