Vienna Thieves Steal $4 Million Diamond Necklace in Broad Daylight Museum Heist

A string of high-profile crimes unfolded globally this week, including the brazen daylight theft of a multimillion-dollar diamond necklace from a Vienna museum, the fatal police shooting of a motorist in Nigeria's Rivers State, the arraignment of two Nigerians for a murder in London, and a mixed picture in South Africa's latest crime statistics showing overall murder declines but spikes in political killings.

Two unmasked suspects smashed a display case at the Vienna Museum of Applied Arts on Thursday and stole a platinum necklace with over 600 diamonds worth more than $4 million that once belonged to Egyptian royalty; they fled toward Vienna Stadtpark, one possibly armed. Two Nigerians, Maxwell Oguanaya (32) and Chibueze Chukwurah (34), have been charged with the May murder of Taiwo Ekerin outside a London nightclub; they were remanded in custody and could face life imprisonment if convicted.
