Lessons from Drone Warfare Exercises
Ukrainian drone operators inflicted 70% of an American tank brigade’s casualties during major war games in Germany, forcing US forces to rapidly adapt with electronic warfare, counter-drone systems and dispersed tactics. [1] The $500 Ukrainian drones went up against fully upgraded $25 million M1A2 Abrams tanks and M2A3 Bradley fighting vehicles. [1] The war games held in April recorded more than 750 UAV attacks during the 10-day event. [1] US tanks and armored vehicle forces were forced to quickly adapt when Ukrainian drone operators pummeled the units during the first days of the war games. [1] The US brigade enacted electronic warfare and counter-drone systems to jam the UAVs, with the troops forced to make up for the tactic’s weaknesses that left them exposed to fiber-optic first-person-view drones. [1] With the new systems in place and the troops splitting up their forces to overwhelm drone pilots, the US team was able to break through the enemy line. [1] Drone related casualties fell below 30% by the end of the third day. [1]
Black Sea Shipping Threats
EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas called for an EU naval mission in the Black Sea to protect merchant shipping from Russian drone attacks on grain vessels, which are costing Ukraine €60 million a day in lost exports. [3] Kallas stated in the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Tuesday that the EU should send a mission to the Black Sea to protect merchant shipping. [3] Some six attacks in 10 days by suspected Russian drones marks a dangerous and unacceptable escalation in the Black Sea. [3] Rescuers are still searching for seven sailors missing after the drone attack on two tankers near Romania’s Black Sea coast. [3] Russian drone and missile tactics in the Black Sea have shifted to target people rather than just cargo, increasing risks to civilian sailors. [3] Before, they targeted ports, not civilians, or vessels at sea, but they realised that threat to life is a much more effective deterrent to commercial shipping than threat to cargo. [3]

Broader Global Context in Current Wars in the World
The Russo-Ukrainian war is the largest conflict in Europe since the Second World War, and over the past four years it has fundamentally changed today’s character of war. [1] The exercise highlighted how drones have become the defining weapon of modern war, with Ukraine and Russia firing hundreds of ever-evolving UAVs at each other every week. [1] Iran has also utilized its Shahed suicide drones, which Russia has improved upon, to attack US forces in the Middle East. [1]
Drone Technology Spread and Requests for Expertise
Ukraine’s drone development has left the country with a flood of requests from nations in the Middle East to help improve their UAV and counter-UAV technology. [1] The war games demonstrated the devastation Ukraine’s drone unit was capable of after years of experience fighting against Russia. [1] During Greywolf’s Combined Resolve rotation, the brigade learned critical lessons in integrating their capabilities alongside counter-unmanned aircraft system equipment and tactics, techniques, and procedures. [1]
What to watch next: Ukrainian forces continue to face concentrated Russian pressure on the Kostiantynivka and Pokrovsk fronts while the outcomes of drone adaptations tested in Germany shape responses in ongoing operations.
