Ukraine Strikes Kill 17 in Russian Attack on Kyiv Warehouses
Ukraine strikes on facilities inside Russia occurred alongside the Russian ballistic missiles and drones that struck Kyiv and surrounding areas overnight, killing at least 17 people and injuring dozens more as Ukrainian officials cited a shortage of missile interceptors.
Casualties and Immediate Impact
Russian attacks kill at least 17 as Zelensky says interceptors could have saved lives. In one of the deadliest strikes on Kyiv and the capital region this year, which started after midnight on Wednesday, at least 45 people were injured after residential buildings, a railway station and warehouses were hit. Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said on Telegram that cleanup operations were under way following what it described as a “massive attack”, which took place overnight on Tuesday. [1] Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said there were fears people could be trapped under rubble. Ukraine's emergency services said one person had died in the city of Kyiv and at least 16 injured, with a further 16 dead and 29 injured in the wider region. Fires were still being extinguished in five locations across the region on Wednesday, covering an area of approximately 230,000 sq m. [4] Reporting from Kyiv, Al Jazeera’s Audrey MacAlpine said authorities told her that cluster munitions were used during the attack. Other things that were hit around this city were Epicentr, which is essentially a Walmart. It carries everything from electronics to gardening equipment; things of that nature. You could hear the first explosions around 12:30am, and with the sheer number of missiles – right around 30 – you can just imagine how the successive booms and bangs could be heard by people living here in the capital. Zelenskyy on Shortage of Interceptors
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that ballistic missile interceptors could have saved lives and that delays in supplying anti-ballistic systems lead directly to such casualties and destruction. Zelenskyy said in a post on X that Russia fired 24 ballistic missiles, four cruise missiles and 115 drones during the assault. He also said such “horrific casualties and destruction” were a direct result of Ukraine’s shortage of missile interceptors. “Ballistic missile interceptors could have saved the lives of those killed today. It is very important that our partners understand that delays in supplying them, or an unwillingness to provide anti-ballistic systems, lead directly to such horrific casualties and destruction.” [1] Ukraine, who has consistently urged allies for more US-made Patriot missile interceptors to defend against Russian ballistics, has not reported intercepting any of the missiles in the overnight attack. Zelenskyy added delays in receiving anti-ballistic systems from partners leads to “horrific casualties and destruction”. [4] Ukraine's acting Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has called on the world to continue exerting pressure on Russia through sanctions in the wake of Russia's new massive attack on Kyiv Oblast. Sybiha stressed that every interceptor missile matters. “These are life-saving tools, and I urge all partners to expedite all relevant decisions,” Sybiha wrote. [5]
Targets Hit in Ukraine
Targets included warehouse facilities in Brovary and Bucha belonging to civilian businesses such as a brewing company, construction materials warehouses, retail outlets like Epicentr, and a Nova Poshta sorting hub, plus a railway station. The main targets of the attack were warehouse facilities belonging to civilian businesses. There were also strikes on infrastructure and a railway station. These facilities had nothing to do with the war – a brewing company, construction materials warehouses, and civilian logistics facilities. [1] A sorting hub in Kyiv belonging to Nova Poshta (Nova Post), Ukraine's largest private delivery company, was destroyed in the attack. A distribution warehouse complex in Brovary belonging to Rozetka, one of Ukraine's largest retailers and online marketplaces, was destroyed in a strike by three ballistic missiles. [3] Serhii Beskrestnov, an adviser to Zelenskyy, accused Moscow of targeting civilian infrastructure in a post on Facebook. “The war of attrition has entered its next phase. The enemy is attacking everything in its path: retail warehouses, food warehouses, logistics hubs, enterprises, and construction material warehouses,” Beskrestnov said. Russian Claims and Retaliatory Strikes
The Russian defence ministry claimed the Kyiv strikes hit logistics hubs used for storing and delivering weapons, military supplies and drone production. The Russia defence ministry said it had struck logistics hubs and supply centres in Kyiv and the surrounding region. “These centres were involved in the storage, delivery of various weapons and military supplies, as well as in the production and distribution of unmanned aerial vehicles,” it said. [4] Ukraine responded with strikes on Russian territory, hitting a Wildberries warehouse sorting office in Tula oblast and an oil refinery in Ufa. Ukraine also launched strikes against Russia on Wednesday, hitting the sorting office of a warehouse belonging to Wildberries, the country’s largest online retailer. Ukrainian drones struck the facility in the town of Aleksin in Tula oblast, according to regional Governor Dmitry Milyaev. [1] Dmitry Milyaev, the governor of Russia's Tula region, said on Wednesday that a drone had crashed into a warehouse of e-commerce giant Wildberries in the region overnight and caused a fire. [4] Ukraine also struck an oil refinery in Ufa in Bashkortostan. [1]
International and Diplomatic Context
Zelenskyy has called on countries unable to supply interceptor missiles to support Ukraine by imposing additional sanctions on Russia, specifically targeting those involved in manufacturing ballistic missiles. He urged the G7 and the European Union to take action. On Monday, Zelenskyy alleged that most of the 17 key companies involved in producing the missiles are exploiting loopholes to evade existing sanctions. [1] Ukraine's acting Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stressed that every interceptor missile matters and urged all partners to expedite all relevant decisions. He also added that Russia's ability to produce ballistic missiles must be destroyed. “Additional, tough sanctions are critical and urgent,” the minister stressed. [5] Last week, United States President Donald Trump appeared to backtrack on a promise to grant Kyiv a licence to produce Patriot missile interceptors domestically. However, citing four sources, the Reuters news agency reported that US officials are discussing with Ukraine how to replenish its depleted stocks of Patriot missiles. [1]
Government Response on Business Continuity
Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi has said the government will hold meetings with businesses to ensure logistics and trade companies can continue operating without interruption following a large-scale Russian attack on Ukraine on the night of 4-5 August. “Russia is intensifying and expanding its terror against businesses that serve millions of people. Ukrainian companies, manufacturing facilities, and trade and logistics complexes have come under attack. There is no military purpose whatsoever behind these strikes – this is terrorism!” [3] Koretskyi said the government will urgently organise meetings with business representatives and work out the necessary measures to ensure logistics and trade companies can continue operating without interruption in response to Russia's missile terror.
