Ukraine Strikes Hit 150 Russian Vessels in Sea of Azov and Kerch Strait
Ukraine Strikes Disrupt Russian Shipping and Energy
Ukraine's nearly two-week Operation Molotshka struck around 150 vessels operating in the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait area. [2] Ukraine's efforts to neutralize air defense systems in occupied Crimea and Donbas opened a broad window of operational freedom that allowed Ukraine to eliminate Russia's freedom of navigation in the Sea of Azov within just four days. [2] Ukraine's use of uncrewed surface vessels against shadow fleet tankers forced Russia to stop using the Sea of Azov and redirect commercial flows to Black Sea shipping routes that carry increased risks. [2] Ukraine also forced Russia to publicly acknowledge the need to redirect its commercial flows to other modes and routes of transport. [2] The extent of the pain inflicted on Russia's economy appears in Russia's response of long-range strikes on three consecutive days against Kyiv as well as the port infrastructure of Odesa and vessels entering the port. [2] Fuel shortages in Russia caused by Ukraine's long-range strikes on oil refineries since July 10 are expected to last for a long time. [2] The Estonian Defense Forces' Intelligence Center stated that the damage inflicted by Ukraine is extensive and will persist for a long time. [2] Col. Ants Kiviselg said that although the Russian authorities are trying to publicly portray the energy crisis as a temporary phenomenon that will pass quickly, the shortages will likely impact the upcoming Duma elections and increase repression in the country. [2] Growing social tensions in Russian society and the visibly declining popularity of Putin's regime could significantly affect the course of Russia's State Duma elections even in the context of widespread electoral fraud and manipulation. [2] As a result a power vertical with increasingly narrow legitimacy will have to resort to ever more totalitarian and increasingly repressive measures to maintain control. [2]

G7 and EU Demand Ceasefire in Sudan Conflict
G7 foreign ministers and the European Union's foreign policy chief urged Sudan's Rapid Support Forces and allied armed groups to immediately cease any action likely to lead to further atrocities or endanger civilians in El-Obeid including drone strikes and impediments to humanitarian access. [4] The leaders also called on all parties including the Sudanese army to cease hostilities allow aid access and engage in good-faith talks. [4] Following the atrocities committed during the Rapid Support Forces' siege and attack on El Fasher the group remains gravely concerned about alleged severe violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law across Kordofan and Darfur regions as well as Blue Nile in Sudan. [4] The ministers urged the Rapid Support Forces as well as the Sudanese Armed Forces and allied armed groups to abide by their obligations under the rules of international humanitarian law and international human rights law as applicable because civilians must be protected. [4] Ministers also backed United Nations efforts to de-escalate the crisis and called on the UN Security Council to expand the Darfur arms embargo to the whole of Sudan. [4] They urged external players to halt military and financial support to the warring sides and vowed to promote accountability for violations while supporting Sudan's unity and democratic aspirations. [4] Sudan has been at war since April 2023 with reports of human rights violations and crimes against humanity. [4] The conflict has been described by the UN as the world's worst humanitarian crisis. [4] Across Sudan nearly 19.5 million people face high levels of acute food insecurity according to the IPC. [4]

[5] Preliminary findings showed that the device was an old unexploded landmine left in the area. [5]
Broader Context of Global Conflicts
The incidents reported this week span multiple regions and reflect ongoing regional tensions. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] Ukrainian operations have disrupted Russian navigation and energy supplies while fuel shortages are projected to persist. [2] A third maritime incident off Oman follows earlier events in the Gulf of Aden and off Oman. [1] An attack by over 100 Israeli occupiers occurred north of Ramallah. [3] International calls urge an end to actions in El-Obeid and an expanded arms embargo amid Sudan's three-year war that has produced nearly 19.5 million people facing acute food insecurity. [4] Two Thai soldiers sustained injuries from an old landmine during base maintenance along the Thai-Cambodian border. [5]
What to watch next: Observers will monitor whether fuel shortages in Russia affect the Duma elections and whether the Rapid Support Forces halt actions in El-Obeid as urged by the G7 and EU.
