Severe Thunderstorms Hit Northeast Ohio as Tropical Depression Soaks Taiwan
Severe thunderstorms are producing damaging winds and heavy rain across northeastern Ohio while a tropical depression is driving torrential rainfall in southern Taiwan and heavy rains have injured seven people in northeast Spain.
Severe Thunderstorms Strike Northeastern Ohio
The National Weather Service in Cleveland issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for northwestern Trumbull County, Geauga County, northeastern Cuyahoga County, southern Lake County and southwestern Ashtabula County in northeastern Ohio until 2:45 p.m. EDT. [1] At 1:38 p.m. EDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from near Euclid to near Warrensville Heights and were moving east. [1] A separate Severe Thunderstorm Warning covered areas including Akron, Parma, Cuyahoga Falls, North Royalton, Solon, Hudson, Twinsburg, Macedonia, Stow, Garfield Heights, Maple Heights, Parma Heights, Broadview Heights, Brecksville, Bedford, Seven Hills, Bedford Heights and Fairlawn. [2] At 1:33 p.m. EDT, severe thunderstorms along a line from Parma to near North Royalton to near Medina were moving east at 30 mph. [2] Radar indicated the primary hazard was 60 mph wind gusts, which can damage trees and power lines. [2] The warnings cover parts of Ashtabula, Trumbull, Geauga, Cuyahoga and Lake counties, with storms expected to produce impacts on trees and power lines as they track eastward. [1] [2]
Tropical Depression Brings Torrential Rain to Taiwan
The Central Weather Administration forecast that tropical depression TD22 would strengthen southwesterly winds and bring more downpours, with the most intense rainfall expected from yesterday through early Tuesday. [3] Southern Taiwan could see extremely heavy rain during that period, while Chiayi and eastern Taiwan could see localized extremely heavy rain and central Taiwan localized heavy rain. [3] By 3:20 p.m. yesterday, Pingtung County’s Wandan Township had recorded 281 mm of accumulated rainfall, the highest nationwide, followed by Majia Township with 263 mm. [3] Kaohsiung’s Siaogang District had recorded 254.5 mm and Linyuan District 242 mm, while Tainan’s Gueiren District had recorded 237.5 mm. [3] Tainan had experienced continuous rain since Friday night, with Yongkang District recording more than 132 mm of rainfall in three hours and Rende District nearly 100 mm over the same period. [3] As of yesterday afternoon, TD22 was about 350 km east of Taiwan. [3] The Central Weather Administration continued to classify the system as a tropical depression, saying its circulation and convection remained relatively weak, and expected it to move northwest before turning west toward the Chinese coast. [3] Typhoon Saudel was about 2,600 km east of Taiwan at 2 p.m. yesterday, with maximum sustained winds of about 137 kph and gale-force winds extending an average of 180 km from its center. [3] Saudel is forecast to move northwest before turning west-northwest toward the Ryukyu Islands, reaching the area on Wednesday or Thursday. [3]

Heavy Rains Lash Northeast Spain, Injuring Seven
Heavy rain battered northeast Spain, flooding streets, trapping people in cars and injuring at least seven people, officials said Saturday. [4] The downpours caused street inundation and left some residents unable to exit vehicles until assistance arrived. [4] At least seven people required medical attention as a direct result of the flooding and related incidents. [4]
Prolonged Heatwaves Disrupt Life in Sicily
Five years after Floridia recorded Europe’s highest temperature, prolonged heatwaves are emptying its streets, disrupting local traditions and placing growing pressure on agriculture and beekeeping. [5] The August 2021 record of 48.8 degrees Celsius turned the Sicilian town into a symbol of Europe’s warming climate. [5] In 2024, the World Meteorological Organization certified it as the highest temperature ever recorded in continental Europe. [5] Floridia reached 33.3 C on August 12, 2026, 4.1 C above the average for the 1961-1990 historic norm. [5] The shift is visible across the town of 20,000 on the outskirts of Syracuse, where Piazza del Popolo is nearly empty for much of the day. [5] The heat lingers well into the evening, disrupting the local tradition known as ‘pigghiari u frescu’, when families pull kitchen chairs outside their homes to catch the breeze and socialize. [5] Floridia’s culture councillor Serena Spada said many people end up shut indoors and compared the situation to another kind of lockdown, noting that children cannot go to the park or play outside until late afternoon because temperatures remain hostile. [5] SIAS director Luigi Pasotti said the increase in average temperatures is the greater concern, with entire weeks or months of consistently high temperatures rather than isolated peaks. [5] Night-time temperatures are climbing too, leaving little respite, and exceptionally high numbers of tropical nights and super-tropical nights are being recorded in some parts of Sicily. [5] In 2021, more than 3,000 beehives were lost in the area of Floridia and honey production plunged by 80 percent. [5] Agronomist Francesco Bellomi said the decline in bee populations and the number of beekeepers, together with the loss of pollinators due to climate change and the widespread use of pesticides, is leading to a reduction in biodiversity and lower quality and yields in agricultural production. [5] Beekeeper Francesco Pappalardo said there is much more concern about getting through the summer than there used to be, with the heat able to cause individual colonies to collapse and sometimes entire apiaries to be lost. [5]
Global Pattern of Active Severe Weather
Severe thunderstorms producing 60 mph wind gusts are moving east across northeastern Ohio counties including Ashtabula, Trumbull, Geauga, Cuyahoga and Lake. [1] [2] At the same time, tropical depression TD22 is strengthening southwesterly winds and driving extremely heavy rain across southern Taiwan, with accumulated totals reaching 281 mm in Wandan Township. [3] Heavy rains in northeast Spain have flooded streets and injured at least seven people. [4] In Sicily, average temperatures remain consistently elevated, with tropical nights adding to the pressure on daily routines, social traditions and sectors such as agriculture and beekeeping. [5] These events are occurring against a backdrop of broader severe weather activity, including the separate track of Typhoon Saudel far east of Taiwan. [3]
What to watch next: The Central Weather Administration expects the most intense rainfall from TD22 through early Tuesday, with southern Taiwan facing extremely heavy rain and Chiayi and eastern Taiwan facing localized extremely heavy rain, while the system continues to strengthen southwesterly winds.
