Severe Thunderstorms Sweep Across Central and Eastern Iowa
A severe thunderstorm moving southeast at 55 mph was located 6 miles northeast of Pella at 650 AM CDT, bringing 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail to southwestern Poweshiek County, northeastern Marion County, Mahaska County and southeastern Jasper County until 745 AM CDT. [1] Severe thunderstorms moving southeast at 55 mph produced measured wind gusts of 60-70 mph in Benton and Iowa Counties, with hazards of 70 mph gusts and quarter-size hail impacting Pleasant Creek State Recreation Area to near Gibson until 745 AM CDT. [2] Severe thunderstorms moving east at 60 mph were located along a line from near Atkins to near Montezuma at 643 AM CDT, bringing 70 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail to Keokuk County, Johnson County, Washington County and Linn County in Iowa until 745 AM CDT. [3] These warnings were issued separately by the National Weather Service offices in Des Moines and the Quad Cities, covering overlapping time frames through mid-morning. Swiss Authorities Warn of Dangerous Heatwave
Switzerland's Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology issued a Level 3 heatwave warning out of 4 for large parts of the country from Thursday lunchtime, with Basel City and Basel Country under the highest Level 4 warning. [4] Temperatures are expected to reach 35 degrees Celsius. [4] The warnings pose risks of circulatory problems, physical discomfort, and impacts to health, animals, environment and infrastructure until 8 pm Tuesday. [4] At level 3 the risk is described as significant while the highest level indicates a high risk of circulatory problems and physical discomfort. [4] It is recommended that people drink plenty of fluids, seek shade and avoid physical exertion where possible during the period of warnings. [4]
Ongoing Minor Flooding Along the Pearl River
Minor flooding is forecast for the Pearl River near Pearl River, affecting Pearl River and Hancock Counties in Mississippi and St. Tammany Parish in Louisiana from Monday morning to Monday evening. [5] At 14.0 feet, secondary roads to the river and throughout Honey Island Swamp are inundated. [5] The Flood Warning continues for the Lower Pearl River including the area near Pearl River. [5] Minor flooding remains the expected condition along this stretch of the river through the forecast period. [5]
