Iran’s Response to the Caspian Sea Attack
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated that the Ukrainian attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea cannot go unanswered. [1] The attack caused an explosion that killed one sailor and injured another, which Iran described as an act of aggression against a civilian vessel. Ukraine’s Allegations Against Russia and Iran
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy alleged that Russia is sharing satellite intelligence with Iran to aid military operations in the Middle East, citing Russian surveillance of Gulf nations and U.S. military facilities. [3] Earlier, Zelenskiy said Ukrainian forces had successfully struck a Russian warship and additional vessels allegedly used to transport Iran-linked military cargo in the Caspian Sea. [3] In a later post on X, the Ukrainian leader said Kyiv had documented active Russian satellite surveillance of Gulf nations and U.S. military facilities beginning in early July. [3] According to Zelenskiy, the intelligence gathered by Russian satellites was later used by Iran to plan and assess regional attacks. [3] He argued there was a clear correlation between Russian satellite imagery and Iranian military operations, claiming the surveillance occurred both before strikes to assist planning and afterward to evaluate damage. [3] Zelenskiy added that Russian satellite monitoring on July 19 and July 20 focused on four military air bases across the Middle East, including two in Bahrain, one in Jordan, and one in Kuwait. [3] The competing claims highlight growing geopolitical tensions surrounding the Ukraine war, with both Kyiv and Tehran accusing each other of actions that could further expand the conflict beyond Eastern Europe while drawing greater attention to Russia’s military cooperation with Iran. Israeli Incursion into Southern Syria
Israel has launched a new military incursion into southwestern Syria, establishing a checkpoint and dropping warning leaflets, prompting UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to condemn violations of Syrian sovereignty. [2] Israeli soldiers advanced towards villages in southwestern Syria on Sunday, setting up a checkpoint at Al-Ardah, while shelling was also heard nearby, Syria’s state news agency SANA reported. [2] Leaflets were dropped warning residents against attempting to obstruct the advance of Israeli vehicles. [2] The incursion came as United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, on a visit to Syria, condemned Israel’s violations. [2] Syria’s sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity must be fully respected, he wrote in a social media post. [2] Violations by Israel of the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement are unacceptable and must stop. [2] Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, he said that the UN is set to submit a comprehensive report to the UN Security Council on the issue at the end of the month. [2] Israel has conducted increasingly regular incursions into Syrian territory since the fall of the regime of ousted President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. [2] In the immediate aftermath, it seized control of the UN-controlled buffer zone separating the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights from the rest of Syria, saying the 1974 disengagement agreement with Syria had collapsed. [2] Since then, Israel has carried out regular attacks, raids and searches, and established military checkpoints further within Syria. [2] Israeli officials say they intend to remain in southern Syria, in what they call a security zone. [2]
Lebanese Army Accusations Against Israel
Lebanon’s army accused Israel of obstructing its takeover of pilot zones in southern Lebanon through continued shelling, bulldozing, and clearance operations, in violation of a U.S.-backed ceasefire agreement. [4] The Lebanese army has accused Israel of obstructing its efforts to take over control of security in southern Lebanon. [4] The Lebanese military said in a statement on Sunday that the Israeli army was continuing to conduct shelling and clearance operations, preventing Lebanese troops from fully taking over villages as agreed. [4] The Lebanese army on Tuesday deployed troops to the first of three pilot zone villages. [4] The move for local forces to take over security follows the signing last month of a United States-backed agreement that should see the phased withdrawal of the Israeli army from southern Lebanon. [4] The continuation of these assaults hinders the completion of the army’s deployment and prevents the return of residents to their villages and towns, the Lebanese army said in its statement. [4] Three villages, or pilot zones, were chosen for the first phase of the Israeli withdrawals – Zawtar al-Gharbiya, Froun and Srifa. [4] However, concerns over the lack of a clear exit schedule from Israel have persisted. [4] Parts of western Zawtar, Tibnit and Nabatieh al-Fawqa were still seeing Israeli gunfire even as civilians returned home, the Lebanese military said on Sunday. [4] Israel was bulldozing, shelling and conducting combing operations with machine guns in Nabatieh, Hdda, Kunin, Bint Jbeil, Nabi Ibel al-Saqi, Khiam, al-Mansouri and Bayt al-Siyad as well as Majdal Zoun in Tyre, it added. [4] A water project in the town of Markaba was also blown up while olive trees and swathes of farmland were razed on the outskirts of the town of Aitaroun. [4]

Broader Regional Context and UN Position
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned violations of Syrian sovereignty as he visited and called for sanctions to be lifted. [2] Guterres’s visit to Syria is the first by a UN chief to the country since 2009. [2] He is expected to visit the UN Disengagement Observer Force, which has been deployed to the buffer zone since 1974. [2] On Sunday, he described the country as being at a moment of opportunity to recover from its 13-year war, and build a more stable, inclusive and prosperous future. [2] The UN chief urged the removal of all sanctions imposed on the country during the era of al-Assad, who was deposed by forces led by al-Sharaa in 2024 after over a decade of civil war. [2] I welcome steps that have eased sanctions, and opening new possibilities for economic recovery, but all these sanctions must be removed immediately, Guterres said. [2] Western countries including the United States have begun lifting economic sanctions, but investors remain cautious. [2] The World Bank has estimated the country’s post-war reconstruction could cost $216bn. [2] The United Nations stands with the people of Syria at this pivotal moment. And I came carrying the strongest possible appeal to the international community, an appeal to spare no effort to support the Syrian people and to support the Syrian government, Guterres said. [2] Syria’s Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani called for Israel’s withdrawal from the buffer zone on Saturday, saying its continued military operations and occupation are a direct threat to the security of the region. [2] In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera’s Al Muqabala, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa said Damascus was working to reach a security agreement with Israel, involving a group of countries. [2] If the security agreement with Israel succeeds, it will pave the way for comprehensive peace without conceding Syria’s right to the occupied Golan Heights, he said. [2] He said that Syria has no interest in entering a confrontation with Israel. [2]
Separate Herder Violence in Nigeria
At least three people were reportedly killed and two others injured in renewed attacks by suspected armed herders on Elulu and Agadagba communities in Ohimini Local Government Area of Benue State. [5] The attacks occurred separately between Friday and Saturday night when the suspected armed herders invaded the communities. [5] A resident of Agadagba, who identified himself simply as Ameh, told journalists in a telephone interview on Sunday that the attackers stormed the village on Saturday night after attacking Elulu community on Friday. [5] The Fulani herdsmen attacked our community yesterday night and attempted to rustle cows. In the process, some youths repelled them. But some of the attackers, who were well armed, shot at the youths and two of them died. It was later we learnt that the same Fulani herdsmen had, a day earlier, invaded Elulu village where they killed one person, Ameh said. [5] When contacted by phone on Sunday, the Chairman of Ohimini Local Government Area, Gabriel Adole, confirmed the two incidents. [5] According to the chairman, the attackers invaded Elulu and Agadagba communities between Friday and Saturday night. [5] It is not only in Agadagba community that the armed herders killed people. They first attacked Elulu village a day before yesterday, killed somebody, attacked another person and collected his Bajaj motorcycle. They also went to Agadagba village that same day to rustle cows, but the people repelled them. So, they shot one person in the leg. They could not rustle the cows. Yesterday, being Saturday, they went there again and killed two persons in Agadagba. As I am talking to you, I am preparing to go to the communities to commiserate with them. So far, three lives were lost in the attacks. They injured two persons — the one whose motorcycle they took and the one they attacked while attempting to rustle his cows. Both of them are still in hospital receiving treatment, Adole said. [5] The chairman disclosed that local security personnel, in collaboration with the police, had been deployed to the affected communities to prevent further attacks. [5] He, however, said normalcy was gradually returning to the affected communities following the deployment of security personnel. [5] Ohimini Local Government Area has witnessed repeated attacks in recent weeks, which some residents have linked to the killing of the Benue State Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Risku Mohammed, on June 24, 2026.
