Gaza War Death Toll Exceeds 73,000 After 1,000 Days
As the Gaza war reaches its 1,000th day, Palestinian authorities report more than 73,000 Palestinians killed, over 90 percent of the Gaza Strip destroyed, and widespread devastation including the deaths of more than 21,500 children and 12,500 women. [3]
Death Toll and Demographic Impact
Palestinian authorities have tallied more than 73,000 Palestinians killed in the Gaza war after 1,000 days of Israeli bombardment that began following the October 7, 2023 attack. [3] Of those killed, more than 21,500 were children and more than 12,500 were women, with more than 1,000 of the children under the age of one. [3] More than 520 infants were born and subsequently killed during the period. [3] Over half of those killed are children, women and the elderly. [3] According to the statistics, 9,500 people are missing, which include those that were trapped under the rubble and never found. [3] UN Women says more than 38,000 women and girls have been killed. [1] The Palestinian government’s media office also reported that 26,370 women have been widowed and 58,800 children have been orphaned, of whom 2,700 lost both parents. [3] [1] Over 2,700 families have been fully annihilated and erased while only a single survivor remained in 6,020 families. [3]
Health System Collapse and Medical Toll
A hospital director stated that 1,500 Gaza patients have died while waiting for treatment abroad due to the collapse of the territory's health system, with those deaths now exceeding those due to Israeli airstrikes in that category. [2] The Palestinian government media office reported that 460 people had died from hunger and malnutrition, including 164 children. [3] It added that 23 people were killed in botched aid airdrops, while 28 others died from the cold in displacement camps. [3] During the onslaught, Israel killed 1,700 medical personnel. [3] Furthermore, 5,400 people had to undergo amputations, 18 percent of whom were children, while 1,500 cases of paralysis and 1,200 cases of vision loss have been reported. [3]

Scale of Physical Destruction
More than 90 percent of the Gaza Strip has been destroyed in the Gaza war. [3] As of July 2, Israel has seized control of more than 80 percent of the Gaza Strip. [3] Israel has dropped over 223,000 tons of explosives on Gaza. [3] Israel has shelled what it called the safe humanitarian zone of the Al-Mawasi area a total of 241 times. [3] Thirty-eight hospitals and 96 healthcare centres were shelled, destroyed or put out of service, and Israel also targeted 197 ambulances. [3] No school in the Gaza Strip has remained unscathed over the past 1,000 days, while 81 percent of school buildings now require reconstruction or major rehabilitation, depriving more than 620,000 school-age students of education. [3] Additionally, 17 higher education institutions have been totally or partially destroyed, depriving more than 90,000 university-age students of education. [3]
Humanitarian and Displacement Crisis
The forced displacement led to 2.142 million cases of infectious diseases, including over 71,000 cases of viral hepatitis. [3] More than 12,000 miscarriages were reported during pregnancies due to a lack of food and healthcare in the Gaza Strip. [3] The Palestinian government media office stated that 2.4 million people in the territory were being subjected to genocide, starvation and ethnic cleansing. [3] UN Women has documented the impacts on women who have been widowed, orphaned, displaced and deprived. [1]

Israeli Perspective on the Conflict Milestone
Israelis called on Thursday for a state commission of inquiry into Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack, as the country marked 1,000 days since the deadliest event in its history, which triggered the war in Gaza. [5] Reporting from Jerusalem indicates there is a clear sense in Israel a thousand days into this war that Israel hasn't won anything. [5]
International Legal Developments
