Multiple severe weather events unfolded across the United States and East Asia on Sunday, with flash flooding inundating homes and roads in North Carolina, severe thunderstorms producing damaging winds in Mississippi and Utah, red-flag fire conditions in the northern Rockies, and Typhoon Bavi weakening into a severe tropical storm while spreading heavy rain and disruption across eastern China.
Flash Flooding Hits Smithfield, North Carolina
Emergency management reported 3 to 4 feet of water on numerous roads in downtown Smithfield, North Carolina, with water entering residences after 3 to 5 inches of rain fell and 1 to 2 inches more possible. [2] A flash flood warning was issued for Harnett County because flash flooding was already occurring. [2] The hazard included life threatening flash flooding from thunderstorms producing flash flooding. [2] The source of the report was emergency management. A severe thunderstorm with 60 mph wind gusts moved southeast over Annandale near Madison, Mississippi, at 15 mph. Severe thunderstorms with 60 mph wind gusts tracked west at 15 mph along a line from south of Cedar Breaks National Monument to near Zion National Park and Apple Valley, Utah. [3] The warning was issued for portions of Iron, Kane and Washington counties until 9:15 p.m. MDT. [3] The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City issued the severe thunderstorm warning. [3] At 847 PM MDT, severe thunderstorms were located along the line extending from 12 miles south of Cedar Breaks National Monument to near Zion National Park to near Apple Valley. [3] The affected areas included east central Washington County in southwestern Utah, west central Kane County in southern Utah, and southeastern Iron County in southern Utah. [3]
Red Flag Fire Conditions Escalate in Northern Rockies
A red-flag warning was issued for parts of Montana, Wyoming and South Dakota due to low humidities, hot temperatures and strong gusty winds that will create erratic fire behavior. Typhoon Bavi Weakens While Soaking Eastern China
Typhoon Bavi weakened to a severe tropical storm after landfall in Zhejiang, China. [5] The storm is forecast to produce heavy to extremely heavy rainfall through July 14 across seven provinces including Anhui, Zhejiang and Jiangxi. [5] Strong winds may affect shipping and coastal operations. [5] Authorities issued an orange rainstorm alert and a yellow typhoon alert. [5] The National Development and Reform Commission allocated 100 million yuan to support emergency recovery efforts in Zhejiang and an additional 100 million yuan for post-typhoon recovery efforts in Guangxi. [5] The storm is expected to turn northeast in eastern Anhui on July 13 before moving into the northern Yellow Sea. [5] Heavy rainfall is forecast across Fujian, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Anhui, Jiangsu, Shandong and parts of northeastern China. [5] Some areas of Anhui, Zhejiang and Jiangxi could see extremely heavy downpours. [5] China’s transport ministry raised its emergency response for heavy rainfall to Level II on Sunday. Casualties and Disruptions in Taiwan and Philippines
The storm caused 18 deaths in the Philippines from landslides and drowning with 12 missing. [5] It injured 135 people in Taiwan. [5] Nearly 30 percent of flights were canceled at Shanghai’s two major airports, with 653 inbound and outbound flights canceled on July 12. [5] In Taiwan, authorities lifted the land warning and most flights and ground transportation resumed normal operations. [5] In the Philippines, seven were injured while more than half a million people were affected. [5] The death toll from the typhoon and the monsoon it intensified rose to 18. [5] Twelve people remain missing in the Philippines. [5]
