UK Police Make Seventh Arrest Over Suspected Terror Plot Near RAF Fairford
Arrests Following Suspicious Vehicles Near RAF Fairford
A 22-year-old British national was arrested in Westminster on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts as the seventh arrest linked to the September 27 incident near RAF Fairford. [1] Six prior suspects were released on bail. [1] The incident involved three suspicious vehicles near the Gloucestershire airbase, leading to a major incident declaration, home evacuations, and arrests on suspicion of explosives offences and preparing terrorist acts. [1] British police on Tuesday arrested a 22-year-old man in London on suspicion of a terror offense over a security incident at a U.S.-run military air base in England that authorities have linked to Iran. [5] Senior national coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, Vicki Evans, said it remains a live investigation and police are continuing to pursue multiple lines of enquiry. [1] Five men were arrested on September 27 near the base in connection with the incident and were subsequently released on police bail. [1] The men, aged between 23 and 25, were detained in the early hours of the morning after vehicles were reported to be travelling towards the base. [1] They were arrested on suspicion of explosives offences and later on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act, before being released on bail in what police called an investigative decision that was grounded in experience and strategy. [1] A sixth man, a 25-year-old dual Iranian British national, was arrested on October 1 in Westminster and was also later released on bail. [1] UK Police Arrest 7th Man in Connection With Security Incident at US-Run Air Base. [5] It is the seventh arrest in connection to the incident but no one has been charged. US Military Use of RAF Fairford and Decision to Withdraw Bombers
RAF Fairford, near the village of Whelford, has been used by the US Air Force for decades. [1] In recent months, the US has flown B-1 and B-52 bombers from the base to the Middle East, after the UK approved a request for Fairford to be used for defensive strikes against Iran. [1] On Sunday, it emerged the US had pulled its bombers out of the base and returned them to America. [1] US President Donald Trump said the aircraft were removed due to some threats to the base without giving specific details. [1] While speaking to a group of reporters outside the White House on Monday, Trump was asked if a specific threat had led the US to pull its bombers from the airbase. [1] He replied that they did not fly out by accident and there were some threats. [1] Trump added that rather than tempting the enemy, they would capture the enemy and beat the enemy, but asked why they should leave them there so they moved them around a little bit, not very far. [1] Earlier, US Vice-President JD Vance said the bombers were moved out of an abundance of caution. [1] The comments came after US media reports suggested the decision was made after intelligence suggested Iran was plotting a drone attack. [1] The BBC has not verified those reports. [1] On Tuesday, a spokesperson for US European Command, which coordinated American military activity in Europe, said it would be inappropriate to discuss matters of intelligence but that the US would continue to assess the threat environment at bases. [1] The spokesperson added the US remains at the highest state of readiness and would take appropriate actions to protect our people, our platforms, and the bases where our forces operate. [1] Prior to Trump's intervention on Monday, a No 10 spokesperson had insisted RAF Fairford was safe and pointed to his previous comments, where he praised the UK's police, defence and security services in relation to the base. The Attack on FlyDubai Flight FZ1073
On September 30, Flydubai Flight FZ1073, carrying more than 170 passengers and crew from Dubai to Tel Aviv, was forced into an emergency diversion after the co-pilot attacked Captain Smit Machchhar in the cockpit with a crash axe and attempted to take control of the aircraft. [3] The plane rapidly lost altitude before Machchhar, despite suffering serious injuries, managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew to overpower the attacker. [3] Two off-duty pilots then helped land the aircraft safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. [3] On September 30, 2026, Flydubai Flight 1073 departed Dubai International Airport for Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, Israel, carrying approximately 174 passengers, the majority of them Israeli citizens, including 4 United States citizens and 27 children. [3] Midway through the flight, the first officer attacked the captain on the flight deck with the aircraft’s emergency crash axe and attempted to seize the flight controls, and the aircraft lost more than 14,000 feet of altitude in under 30 seconds. [3] Captain Smit Machchhar, a citizen of India, fought off the attack and, despite grave injuries, used his remaining strength to unlock the cockpit door so that off-duty pilots could enter and land the aircraft and so that crew and passengers could restrain the first officer. [3] The aircraft landed safely at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia with all passengers and crew accounted for. [3] Emirati authorities said the Omani co-pilot attacked the captain with an emergency axe and attempted to seize control of the aircraft before passengers and crew intervened. [2] Reuters reported on Monday, citing two Israeli officials with knowledge of the investigation, that the co-pilot told UAE interrogators he had planned the attack before joining FlyDubai. [2]
UAE Investigation and Determination of Terrorist Intent
The UAE subsequently launched an investigation, and on October 3 its Attorney General said the probe had found that the co-pilot attempted to carry out a terrorist act. [3] Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances, motive, possible links and physical and digital evidence, with authorities in other countries also looking into the incident. [3] Whereas, on October 3, 2026, the Attorney General of the United Arab Emirates announced that the Emirati investigation had determined that the first officer attempted to carry out a terrorist act. [3] The UAE investigation is continuing into the circumstances of the alleged attack, including the co-pilot's motives and possible connections. [2]

Conspiracy Theories and Political Reactions
An alleged attempt by a FlyDubai co-pilot to crash a Tel Aviv-bound passenger plane has spawned conspiracy theories online, with sceptics branding the incident Bibiwood and questioning virtually every element of the official account. [2] The theories began circulating within hours of the incident aboard flight FZ1073 last Wednesday, ranging from claims that Israeli intelligence orchestrated the attack to suggestions that it never happened at all. [2] Others have focused on the timing ahead of Israel's 27 October election, the flight number, details in passenger videos and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's subsequent meeting with passengers involved. [2] Bibiwood combines Benjamin Netanyahu's nickname, Bibi, with Hollywood, and is being used by sceptics who claim aspects of the incident were staged, manipulated or orchestrated by Israel. [2] Some allege the entire incident was a false flag orchestrated by Israel, with theories ranging from an attempt to generate international sympathy to claims it was staged ahead of Israel's 27 October election. [2] Netanyahu has been accused of capitalising politically on the incident after it occurred, publicly embracing returning passengers and linking the attack to earlier warnings he made about security threats. [2] Opposition leader Yair Lapid accused Netanyahu's allies of playing cheap politics, while a source close to the UAE government reportedly said Abu Dhabi believed the election is driving the matter, not logic. [2] Israeli media have also questioned Netanyahu's handling of the incident, with the Times of Israel describing it as a perfect campaign prop as the prime minister sought to associate himself with the passengers' heroism. [2] Online sceptics have scrutinised videos filmed aboard the aircraft for apparent inconsistencies. [2] Some have questioned why oxygen masks were apparently not visible following reports that the aircraft rapidly lost altitude, while others have pointed to apparently calm passengers or objects remaining upright. [2] Passenger interviews have attracted similar scrutiny, particularly accounts from those who helped restrain the alleged attacker and regain control of the cockpit. [2] Early uncertainty also provided fertile ground for competing accounts. [2] While dramatic details emerged through Israeli media and officials, FlyDubai's initial statements were considerably more limited, describing an onboard incident while authorities investigated what had happened. [2] The UAE subsequently released a more detailed account confirming the attack and identifying the weapon allegedly used. [2] Sceptics have also questioned the fortuitous presence of two additional FlyDubai pilots aboard the aircraft, who were able to take control after the alleged attacker was subdued. [2] The pair were reportedly deadheading crew, pilots travelling as passengers to be repositioned for operational duties. [2] Questions have also focused on how the cockpit door was opened. [2] Captain Smit Machchhar has said crew outside were unable to gain access while the co-pilot controlled the cockpit, but that he eventually reached the door's internal release and opened it himself, allowing those outside to enter. [2] A fake video styled to resemble a BBC report has meanwhile circulated online alleging that Mossad and Indian intelligence were involved. [2] Questions about the official account have not been confined to anonymous social media users. [2] Ayoub Khan, the independent MP for Birmingham Perry Barr, publicly questioned the speed at which details of the investigation emerged. [2] Khan said he was genuinely shocked by how quickly Israeli authorities appeared to have established details about the alleged plot, adding that he thought he smelled a rat. [2] The incident has also become entangled with broader opposition to Netanyahu and the Israeli government's ongoing genocide in Gaza, with social media users citing multiple instances of Israel lying about its activities.
