Ten Killed in Cape Town Township Shooting
Ten people were killed and 11 injured in a shooting at an entertainment venue in Lwandle township, Cape Town Metro, South Africa.
Shooting in Lwandle
Gunmen entered the venue, which also sells braaied meat, around 1:46 a.m. local time on Sept. 27, 2026 and opened fire on patrons. [3] Lwandle is a township about 40 km east of central Cape Town. [3] Five individuals died at the scene while five others died after being transported to medical facilities. [3] Eleven others are receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained. [3] Police officers examined the crime scene of the shooting in Lwandle. [3] Local police have opened cases of murder and attempted murder. [3]
Investigation Underway
A multi-disciplinary team led by serious violent crime detectives has been established to investigate the shooting. [3] Detectives are hard at work in search of the perpetrators of the shooting incident with no arrests effected yet. [3] Police said the identities of the deceased would be released once their next of kin had been informed. [3] SAPS management has increased deployments to the area while the search for the gunmen continues. [3] Police also appealed for information from witnesses or anyone who could assist with the investigation, saying all information would be treated confidentially. [3]
Separate Body Discovery in Ekurhuleni
Police in South Africa discovered another body in Ekurhuleni, to the east of Johannesburg, bringing the number of women found dead there in recent months to 10. [2] The body was found on Saturday morning and was identified by the friend with whom she had been at a bar the previous evening. [2] The latest body was discovered at a cemetery in the Tembisa neighbourhood north-east of central Johannesburg. [2] The woman's friend told national broadcaster SABC that she recognised her friend's clothes from the previous night when shown a picture of the body. [2] Gauteng Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni said that, at this early stage in the investigation, it was too soon to say whether the woman's death was linked to the others. [2] He told reporters that the other bodies shared a "similar victimology" that indicated a shared "modus operandi" of killing. [2] "For now, it's not something which we can overrule to say there's a serial killer, but we cannot conclusively indicate as such," Lt Gen Mthombeni said. [2]
Context of Violence in South Africa
South Africa has one of the highest homicide rates, with 5,427 people murdered between April and June this year alone. [2] The South African Human Rights Commission said last week that 569 women were killed and 1,052 others survived attempted murder between April and June this year. [2] The deaths have increased pressure on the national government less than a year after ministers declared gender-based violence a national disaster. NDLEA Drug Busts Across Nigeria
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arrested a 25-year-old newlywed businessman, Lovely Chukwulobelu, at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, for allegedly attempting to traffic 72 wraps of cocaine to Portugal. [1] The suspect was intercepted by NDLEA operatives at the departure hall of the Enugu airport on Thursday, September 25, while attempting to board an Ethiopian Airlines flight to Portugal via Addis Ababa. [1] He was found with cocaine concealed in his stomach and was wearing his wedding ring when he was arrested. [1] The suspect was subsequently placed under excretion observation, during which he egested a total of 72 wraps of cocaine. [1] The NDLEA said Chukwulobelu resorted to drug trafficking to offset expenses incurred during his wedding held on September 13, 2026. [1] In addition, 2,550,000 pills of Tramakings 225mg and 250mg, and Royal Tapentadol 250mg were recovered at the import shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. [1] The drugs, weighing 1,640.55kg, were uncovered during a joint examination of three monitored consignments imported from India and Bangladesh through Qatar Airways, RwandAir and Ethiopian Airlines. [1] In Bauchi State, operatives arrested two suspects, Umar Hamidu, 35, and Abdulkarim Salihu, 45, with 300 compressed blocks of skunk weighing 262.5kg. [1] The cannabis was concealed in the false bottom of a truck marked MUB757 YH along the Maiduguri bypass. [1] Two cannabis farms with a combined estimated yield of 1,360.23kg were destroyed at Eko Camp, Ilushi, Edo State, by NDLEA officers supported by soldiers. [1] In Lagos, two women, Odumabo Kehinde, 36, and Obiekwe Chioma, 40, were arrested at Anifowoshe Street, Mushin, with 3.4kg of skunk. [1] Another suspect, Ugwu Johnson, 58, was intercepted at Ebute-Ero motor park with 5.920kg of skunk, 2,400 ampoules of pentazocine injection, 8,400 tablets of nitrazepam and 40,000 pills of tramadol. [1] In Oyo State, two Togolese nationals, Yinusa Abdulsamad, 35, and Fatai Baba, 33, were arrested along the Iganna-Ilero road with 305.6kg of skunk concealed in two pickup vans. [1] At the Seme border in Badagry, Lagos, five suspects were also arrested with 420 cartons of nitrous oxide, popularly known as laughing gas, weighing 1,688.4kg. [1] The suspects were identified as Kingsley John, 40; John Okeke, 44; Lamidi Ismaila, 40; Babatunde Samuel, 42; and Afeesu Idowu, 47. [1] Two vehicles used to convey the consignment from the border into Lagos were also seized. [1] The NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), commended the officers and men of the MMIA, AIIA, Lagos, Oyo, Edo, Seme and Bauchi Commands for the operations. [1]
