Severe Thunderstorms Bring Damaging Winds and Hail to Montana, Mississippi and Minnesota
Severe thunderstorms are producing damaging winds, hail, and flash flooding across parts of the central and eastern United States on Thursday evening, while a US hiker was killed by lightning on Sicily’s Mount Etna.
Active Severe Thunderstorm Warnings in Montana
The National Weather Service in Glasgow has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for southeastern Garfield County in northeastern Montana and west central Prairie County in northeastern Montana until 6:45 PM MDT. [1] At 5:46 PM MDT, a severe thunderstorm was located near Cohagen, or 21 miles southeast of Jordan, moving southeast at 40 mph. [1] The hazard includes 60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail, according to radar indicated sources. [1] Impacts include expected hail damage to vehicles and wind damage. [1]
Mississippi Thunderstorm Threatens Tupelo Region
At 6:46 PM CDT, a severe thunderstorm was located over Tombigbee State Park, moving east at 25 mph. [2] The hazard includes 60 mph wind gusts from radar indicated sources. [2] Impacts include expected damage to roofs, siding, and trees. [2] Locations impacted include Tupelo, Fulton, Baldwyn, Verona, Okolona, Tombigbee State Park, Trace State Park, Saltillo, Guntown, Shannon, Plantersville, Mantachie, Fairview, Pratts Friendship, Troy, Sandy Springs, New Wren, Blair, Furrs, and Evergreen. Minnesota Line of Severe Storms Moving Southeast
The National Weather Service in Duluth MN has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for southeastern Itasca County in north central Minnesota, northeastern Aitkin County in east central Minnesota, and southwestern St. Louis County in northeastern Minnesota until 7:45 PM CDT. [5] At 6:44 PM CDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from near Pengilly to near Warba to 7 miles northwest of Swan River, moving southeast at 40 mph. [5] The hazard includes 60 mph wind gusts. [5]
Flash Flooding Reported in Ohio and West Virginia
The National Weather Service in Charleston has issued a Flash Flood Warning for southeastern Meigs County in southeastern Ohio, west central Roane County in central West Virginia, and Jackson County in northwestern West Virginia until 10:45 PM EDT. [4] At 7:44 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. [4] Between 1 and 2 inches of rain have fallen, with additional rainfall amounts of 0.5 to 1 inches possible in the warned area. [4]
US Hiker Struck by Lightning on Mount Etna
A US hiker was killed by lightning on Sicily’s Mount Etna. [3]
What to watch next includes continued movement of the severe thunderstorm near Cohagen southeast at 40 mph until 6:45 PM MDT and the line of severe thunderstorms in Minnesota southeast at 40 mph until 7:45 PM CDT, along with the thunderstorm over Tombigbee State Park moving east at 25 mph.
