[2] He rang the school bell and ordered everyone out even though the flood had not yet been officially confirmed. [2] Dawadi also redirected school buses to stop at safer locations, with one bus turning around just before an old bridge collapsed. [2] From a nearby ridge the principal watched the school where he had once studied and later taught disappear under water, mud, stones and branches. [2] Two colleagues from the school remain missing. [2] Dawadi has declined any hero status, stating that evacuating the students was simply his responsibility. [2]

Border Crossing Devastated in Minutes

The flood struck the Nepal-China border crossing at Rasuwagadhi and Gyirong on 26 August after a glacier collapse sent a surge of water, mud, boulders and ice down the valley in about seven minutes. [5] CCTV footage from Gyirong shows a dark wall of material appearing at 10:59:53 local time. [5] Seismic instruments detected movement in the mountains at 8:37am, less than two minutes after the final immigration transaction at 8:35:03am. [5] The Friendship Bridge and multiple buildings at the border were swept away. [5] The immigration office stood about 100 metres above the river yet the water rose high enough to engulf the area. Widespread Destruction of Schools

At least 69 schools have been destroyed across northern Nepal, leaving 19,000 students without access to education.
