Current Wars in the World: Former Ukraine Footballer Roman Maksymyuk Confirmed Dead on Donetsk Front After 20 Months
The confirmation of Roman Maksymyuk's death highlights the human cost of current wars in the world, where former athletes have joined the fighting after Russia's 2022 invasion.
Death of Former Ukrainian International Roman Maksymyuk
Roman Maksymyuk, aged 50, disappeared after his last phone call on 30 January 2025 while heading to the Pokrovsk area in Donetsk as an artilleryman in the 25th Separate Airborne Brigade. [1] His body was identified through DNA matching with his daughter Daria. [1] The former player served on the front line in the Donetsk region and was seen for the last time trying to escape a siege in an area of intense conflict. [1] He made his final call to his wife Vera before vanishing, telling her he was going to the dangerous Pokrovsk zone and might not be in contact for a long time. [1] After nearly 20 months without contact, DNA tests confirmed the match with his daughter. [1]
Career and Post-Retirement Path
In his playing days Roman Maksymyuk acted as a midfielder for Ukrainian clubs including Dynamo Kyiv, Dnipro, Volyn, Chornomorets and Prykarpattia. [1] Between 1998 and 2002 he earned five caps for the Ukraine national team. [1] He retired from football in 2011. [1] Following the 2022 invasion he enlisted in the war effort as an artilleryman with the 25th Separate Airborne Brigade of Sicheslav. [1]

Tributes and Family Impact
The family and friends had hoped he managed to escape the front line before the DNA results arrived. [1] In June of the previous year the Ukrainian national team wore his shirt and military jacket during a friendly match against Canada to honour him. [1] The gesture came while the outcome of his disappearance remained unknown to the public. [1]
Recent Russian Strikes on Ukraine
On the night of 16 May Russian forces under Putin struck 15 locations across Ukraine with missiles and more than 300 drones. [1] The attack killed nine people and wounded 90 others while targeting critical energy infrastructure. [1] Emergency power cuts were introduced in the Bucha district of Kyiv Oblast on instructions from Ukrenergo. [2] Scheduled outage timetables do not apply during such emergency measures. [2] Russian drones had previously struck an energy facility near Staryi Vyshnivets in Ternopil Oblast, leaving some consumers without electricity. [2]

Ukrainian Counterattacks and New Weaponry
Ukraine has intensified its own attacks in response. [1] Forces launched a strike on a major Russian chemical plant more than 3,000 km from the front line. [1] Sea drones hit a Russian Black Sea port, disrupting commercial routes. [1] Ukraine recently introduced a new medium-range attack drone called the Thor Hammer capable of carrying warheads up to 50 kg at speeds up to 180 km/h. [1]
Power Outages in Occupied Luhansk
Occupation authorities reported large-scale emergency power cuts in Luhansk city and 23 municipalities across the occupied oblast. [4] Leonid Pasichnyk, the Russian-appointed head of the Luhansk occupation authorities, stated that Ukrainian forces had attacked the energy infrastructure of the so-called Luhansk People's Republic. [4] Outages affected the Leninskyi, Kamianobridskyi and Artemivskyi districts inside Luhansk city. [4] Pasichnyk noted that the threat of further attacks remains. [4]
What to watch next: continued Russian missile and drone activity against energy sites alongside Ukrainian use of longer-range drones and sea drones on distant targets.
