South African Police Seize 95kg Cocaine Worth R28 Million at OR Tambo Airport

Law enforcement agencies across South Africa, Nigeria and Singapore have reported multiple major crime and drug interdiction operations in the past week, including the seizure of 95kg of cocaine at a Johannesburg airport, the killing of a bandit kingpin and over 60 others in a Katsina ambush, and the arrest of a woman and eight men in a Singapore underage sex trafficking case.

Major Drug Seizure at Johannesburg Airport

The South African Police Service, working together with key law enforcement partners, has intercepted a consignment of cocaine worth an estimated R28 million at OR Tambo International Airport. [1] An intelligence-driven operation was successfully executed on Friday following information received from SAPS Crime Intelligence's Border Integrity Unit regarding a suspected drug consignment. [1] The information was operationalised by members of the SAPS Visible Policing Unit at OR Tambo International Airport, in collaboration with Customs officials and Menzies Aviation operational members. [1] The cargo, which had arrived on a flight from São Paulo, Brazil, was intercepted immediately upon arrival at approximately 1pm. [1] The 95 kilograms of cocaine were seized at the cargo section of OR Tambo International Airport. [1] No arrests have been made at this stage. [1] Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those involved in the attempted smuggling operation. [1]

Deadly Ambush of Bandits in Katsina State

A notorious bandit leader, Idi Abasu Aiki, and more than 60 other suspected bandits were reportedly killed during an intelligence-led security operation in Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State. [2] The operation was carried out by operatives of the Department of State Services with support from members of the Katsina State Community Vigilantes and specially trained local hunters. [2] The operation was launched after intelligence indicated that over 200 armed bandits, allegedly led by Aiki, were mobilising for a reprisal attack on communities accused of collaborating with local security groups protecting villages in the area. [2] The armed group, reinforced by fighters linked to the Ado Aleru gang in neighbouring Zamfara State, moved into Guga village in Bakori LGA to carry out the planned assault. [2] The planned attack was believed to be in retaliation for an earlier clash in Dawan Laila village, where local hunters reportedly inflicted significant casualties on the bandits. [2] Security agencies had already received intelligence about the movement of the armed group and prepared an ambush. [2] Over 60 of them, including Idi Abasu Aiki and 14 of their top commanders, didn't come out of that trap alive. [2] Four members of the Katsina State Community Vigilantes and local hunters who participated in the raid lost their lives during the exchange of gunfire. [2] Security personnel later carried out clearance operations in the area, during which weapons and other items allegedly abandoned by the fleeing bandits were recovered. [2]

NDLEA Drug Interdictions Across Nigeria

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have intercepted consignments of cocaine to China and Italy, respectively, through a logistics company in Lagos. [3] The drugs were concealed in local mortar and the false bottom of a backpack packaged for shipment. [3] The seizures were made by NDLEA officers of the Directorate of Operations and General Investigations on Thursday. [3] This included 250grams of cocaine factory fitted into the base of a local mortar packed in a carton for export to China. [3] Others are 500grams of the same class A drug hidden in the false bottom of a backpack being shipped to Italy. [3] NDLEA operatives in Rivers State have arrested a 38-year-old notorious drug dealer at Eagle Island, Port Harcourt, following credible intelligence. [3] The suspect was nabbed with various quantities of cannabis, cocaine, methamphetamine, swinol, tramadol and codeine syrup at the time of his arrest on 26 July. [3] NDLEA officers conducting a stop-and-search operation at the DMGS roundabout in Onitsha on 27 July intercepted a truck bearing registration number XK 131 BDG. [3] The truck was loaded with 26,000 bottles of codeine syrup weighing 3,960kg, while the truck driver was arrested. [3] 331.84 kilograms of skunk were recovered from a Toyota Sienna bus with registration number KUJ 26 DV along the Kwale/Ughelli expressway, in Delta, on 26 July. [3] NDLEA officers in Nasarawa State on Tuesday arrested a 64-year-old with 68kg of skunk and 29grams of methamphetamine at Asso Angwan Muazu, Karu area of the state. [3] In Zamfara, NDLEA operatives on patrol along Zaria-Gusau highway on Monday, July 27, intercepted a suspect conveying 7,400 pills of tramadol 225mg suspected to be supplies for criminal elements. [3]

Arrests in 2010 Greek Bank Arson Case

After 16 years of false hope and alleged judicial missteps, Greek police have arrested two suspects and issued a warrant for a third in the case of a fatal arson attack on a bank branch in Athens in 2010. [4] On July 10, two men, both 42 years old, were arrested in Athens on multiple murder charges, while a warrant was issued for a 46-year-old woman living in Britain. [4] The attack on the Marfin bank branch came amid rising anger at the financial crisis roiling Greece and the austerity prescribed by its international creditors. [4] Three people died in the bank fire, caused by a trio of black-clad, masked individuals who set fire to the building on central Stadiou Street during a protest against the austerity demanded of Greece. [4] Bank employees Epaminondas Tsakalis, Paraskevi Zoulias and Angeliki Papathanasopoulou were trapped by the flames on the third floor and suffocated to death. [4] Papathanasopoulou was pregnant. [4] Twenty-one others were injured. [4] In 2013, three bank executives were convicted of manslaughter and bodily harm due to negligence; two were sentenced to 22 years in prison and the third to five years and one month. [4] Then, in 2016, two men were charged with arson but acquitted due to a lack of evidence. [4] The case was closed, reopened again in 2020, reportedly following an anonymous phone call, only to be shelved again. [4] The case remains politically charged to this day. [4]

Singapore Sex Trafficking Charges Involving Minor

A 20-year-old woman was charged on Monday (Aug 3) with trafficking a 16-year-old girl for sexual exploitation and receiving S$1,435 (US$1,120) from the process. [5] The Singaporean woman is also accused of using Telegram to facilitate the provision of sexual services by a 16-year-old girl and living on the earnings of her sex work. [5] Eight men were also charged with obtaining or attempting to obtain the sexual services of a 16-year-old girl by paying her money ranging from S$30 to S$150. [5] This allegedly occurred in February 2024 at places like a toilet for the handicapped, staircase landings and in parked vehicles. [5] They are all Singaporean men: Muhammad Ngasri Sengngari, 35; Wilfred Ang Shui Lai, 34; Irham Hussaini Mohamad Hussain, 24; Muhamad Haziq Bakatiar, 23; Muhammad Ameerulah Noor Mohamed, 27; Syahirul Daud Abdul Razak, 26; Muhammad 'Aizat Khalis Daud, 38; and Fazal Hanafi Abdul Hameed Chaudhry, 41. [5] The police said they had arrested all nine people after investigating the sexual exploitation of two minors who were below the age of 18 at the time. [5] Preliminary investigations revealed that the 20-year-old woman had allegedly exploited both victims by facilitating their provision of paid sex and profiting from the arrangements. [5] The woman faces up to 10 years' jail and a fine of up to S$100,000 for recruiting a person for the purpose of exploitation under the Prevention of Human Trafficking Act. [5]

Ongoing Investigations and Official Statements

The SAPS remains committed to disrupting organised criminal networks involved in the illicit drug trade and will continue working with its law enforcement partners to ensure that South Africa's borders and ports of entry are protected from criminal exploitation. [1] NDLEA Chairman Buba Marwa commended the officers and men of DOGI, Rivers, Anambra, Delta, Nasarawa, and Zamfara Commands for the various successful operations. [3] Marwa urged them and their colleagues across the country to maintain a balanced approach to the Agency's drug control efforts. [3] Lawyer Thrasivoulos Kontaxis, representing 11 injured survivors and relatives of the victims, said he was cautiously optimistic of justice being served. [4] Kontaxis said it will represent mental redemption, that at the end of this journey someone was actually called upon to pay the price by being punished, at least. [4] The woman faces up to 10 years' jail and a fine of up to S$100,000 for recruiting a person for the purpose of exploitation under the Prevention of Human Trafficking Act. [5]

[1] The NDLEA's commands and formations across the country continued their War Against Drug Abuse sensitisation activities in schools, worship centres, workplaces, and communities.
