About this tracker

Myanmar Civil War Overview

Myanmar has been in a state of civil war since the February 2021 military coup, when the Tatmadaw (Myanmar military) overthrew the democratically elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. The resistance movement — comprising the National Unity Government (NUG), People's Defence Forces (PDF), and various Ethnic Armed Organizations (EAOs) — has gained significant ground, particularly since the Operation 1027 offensive launched in October 2023.

Operation 1027, led by the Three Brotherhood Alliance (Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army, Ta'ang National Liberation Army, and Arakan Army), captured multiple towns and military bases in northern Shan State, representing the most significant territorial losses for the junta since the coup. Track the evolving situation on our conflict map and see it alongside all current wars.

Frequently Asked Questions

What started the Myanmar civil war?

The current civil war was triggered by the military coup on February 1, 2021, which overthrew the elected government. Widespread civilian resistance through the Civil Disobedience Movement and the formation of People's Defence Forces escalated into armed conflict. Pre-existing ethnic armed conflicts in border regions also intensified.

Who is winning the Myanmar civil war?

As of 2025-2026, resistance forces have made significant gains, particularly through Operation 1027 and subsequent offensives. The military junta has lost control of substantial territory in northern Shan State, western Rakhine State, and other border areas. However, the junta retains control of major cities and central Myanmar.
