About this tracker

Washington State Wildfire Risk

Washington State faces significant wildfire risk, particularly in the eastern half of the state where dry conditions, grasslands, and pine forests create prime fire conditions from June through October. The Cascade Range divides the state into the wetter western half and the drier eastern half, with most large fires occurring east of the Cascades.

The 2014 Carlton Complex Fire was the largest fire in Washington State history at over 250,000 acres, and the 2020 fire season saw over 800,000 acres burn statewide. Climate change is increasing fire risk on both sides of the Cascades, with western Washington's dense forests — historically too wet to burn regularly — experiencing more fire activity.
