Ukraine Strikes Kill Two as Russian Drones Hit Sumy and Zaporizhzhia
Russian drone attacks struck multiple regions of Ukraine overnight, resulting in two civilian deaths amid widespread damage to infrastructure and residential areas. These Ukraine strikes involved 119 UAVs launched from several Russian regions and occupied Crimea.
Overview of the Overnight Russian Drone Attack
Russian forces launched 119 drones of various types against Ukraine beginning in the evening of 16 June. Ukrainian air defences destroyed or jammed 97 of these UAVs. [5] The drones included Shahed, Gerbera, Italmas and other models, originating from Bryansk, Kursk, Millerovo, Oryol and Cape Chauda in occupied Crimea. [5] Twenty UAVs struck 11 locations across Ukraine while debris from downed drones fell at six additional sites. [5] The scale of the assault reflected ongoing Russian use of long-range weapons in the conflict.
Casualties and Damage in Sumy Oblast
One person was killed and two others injured when a Russian UAV struck near an educational institution in Shostka, Sumy Oblast. [1] The victim was a 57-year-old man who was cycling nearby at the time of the attack. [1] In Sumy city, two UAV strikes hit a Nova Poshta sorting hub, damaging the roof, equipment and mesh containers. [2] More than 13,000 parcels with a total declared value of over UAH 42 million were at the facility during the strikes, though no employees were injured. [2] Firefighters from the State Emergency Service extinguished the resulting blaze. [2]

Impact on Zaporizhzhia
A Russian drone attack in Zaporizhzhia killed one person and injured seven others. [3] The strikes caused a fire in a three-storey residential building that covered 800 square metres. [3] Russian forces carried out five attacks on the city, damaging homes, vehicles, civilian infrastructure and part of Zaporizhzhia National University. [3] Rescue teams had to shelter multiple times due to the ongoing threat during operations. [3]
Additional Effects in Sumy Region
Russian strikes also hit Sumy Oblast in a way that killed numerous animals at a riding school. [3] The regional military administration confirmed the impact on the facility following the UAV assault. [3] This added to the civilian and infrastructure toll reported across the oblast during the overnight period.

Air Defence Response and Ongoing Threat
Ukrainian defence forces employed aircraft, anti-aircraft missile units, electronic warfare assets, unmanned systems units and mobile fire groups to counter the drones. [5] As of 08:00 the attack remained ongoing, with several Russian drones still present in Ukrainian airspace. [5] Early reports confirmed that air defence had destroyed or jammed 97 out of the 119 UAVs launched. [5]
Broader Context of Recent Attacks
Prior Russian strikes had already damaged Nova Poshta facilities, including a distribution hub in Zaporizhzhia on 12 June and another hub in Kharkiv on the night of 7-8 June. [2] The Russian Federation has launched record-high numbers of long-range weapons across Ukraine, resulting in significant civilian casualties in May and early June. [4] A massive attack on Kyiv overnight on 13-14 May killed 24 people, while another large strike on 23-24 May killed four. [4]
What to watch next: Ukrainian authorities continue to assess damage from the overnight drone assault while air defence operations remain active against any remaining UAVs in the airspace.
