About this tracker

The Sudan Civil War

Sudan has been engulfed in a devastating civil war since April 2023, when fighting erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) under General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) under General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo ("Hemedti"). What began as a power struggle between the two military leaders who had jointly overthrown the transitional civilian government in 2021 has escalated into a nationwide conflict with catastrophic humanitarian consequences.

The war has killed tens of thousands of people, displaced over 10 million (one of the largest displacement crises in the world), and created famine conditions across multiple states. Khartoum, once a city of 5 million, has been largely destroyed. Track the unfolding conflict on our conflict map and see it in the context of all current wars.

Key Conflict Dynamics

The SAF controls most of eastern Sudan, Port Sudan (the de facto capital), and parts of Khartoum. The RSF controls most of western Sudan including Darfur, much of Kordofan, and parts of Khartoum. Both sides have been accused of widespread atrocities against civilians, and the conflict has taken on ethnic dimensions particularly in Darfur, where the RSF and allied Arab militias have been accused of ethnic cleansing against non-Arab communities.

External actors play significant roles: the UAE has been accused of supplying weapons to the RSF, Egypt supports the SAF, and Russia's Wagner Group (now Africa Corps) has a presence tied to Sudan's gold mining. The conflict's regional impact extends to Chad, South Sudan, and Egypt, all of which host refugees and face spillover instability.

Frequently Asked Questions

What started the Sudan war?

The war began in April 2023 as a power struggle between Sudan's two military leaders: General al-Burhan (SAF) and General Hemedti (RSF). The immediate trigger was a dispute over the timeline for integrating the RSF into the regular military as part of a planned transition to civilian rule.

How many people have died in the Sudan war?

Exact numbers are difficult to verify, but estimates suggest tens of thousands of people have been killed and over 10 million displaced — making it one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. The actual death toll is likely much higher than official counts due to difficulty accessing conflict zones.

Who is winning the Sudan war?

Neither side has achieved decisive military victory. The RSF controls much of western Sudan and parts of Khartoum, while the SAF holds eastern Sudan and has launched counteroffensives. The conflict has largely devolved into a war of attrition with devastating consequences for civilians.
