Severe Thunderstorms Bring 60 mph Winds and Hail to New York, Iowa and Colorado
Active Warnings Across Three States
The National Weather Service has issued multiple severe thunderstorm and flash flood warnings across parts of Colorado, Iowa and New York. A flash flood warning remains in effect until 8:15 a.m. CDT for Jasper County, southern Marshall County and southeastern Story County in central Iowa. [2] A severe thunderstorm warning is active until 4:15 a.m. EDT for northwest Erie County and southwestern Niagara County in western New York. [3] A severe thunderstorm warning continues until 3 a.m. CDT for southeastern Polk County in central Iowa and northern Warren County in south central Iowa. [4] A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect until 1:45 a.m. MDT for northwestern Kit Carson County in east central Colorado. [5]
Flash Flooding in Central Iowa
A flash flood warning remains in effect until 8:15 a.m. CDT for Jasper County in central Iowa, southern Marshall County in central Iowa and southeastern Story County in central Iowa. [2] At 2:18 a.m. CDT, Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Between 1.5 and 2.5 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 1.5 to 3 inches are possible in the warned area. [2] The warning covers central Iowa locations where these rainfall totals have already been observed and further accumulation remains possible through the morning hours. [2]
Severe Thunderstorms Threaten Western New York
A severe thunderstorm warning is active until 4:15 a.m. EDT for northwest Erie County in western New York and southwestern Niagara County in western New York. [3] At 3:17 a.m. EDT, a severe thunderstorm was located near Niagara Falls, moving east at 25 mph. [3] Hazard conditions include 60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail. [3] The source of the hazard information is radar indicated. [3] Expected impacts include hail damage to vehicles and wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees. [3]
Storms Continue in Central Iowa
A severe thunderstorm warning continues until 3 a.m. CDT for southeastern Polk County in central Iowa and northern Warren County in south central Iowa. [4] At 2:14 a.m. CDT, a severe thunderstorm was located near Southridge Mall, or 6 miles southeast of Des Moines, moving southeast at 15 mph. [4] Hazard conditions include 60 mph wind gusts. [4] Trained weather spotters reported a 58 mph wind gust at the Des Moines Airport at 2:14 a.m. [4] Impacts include expected damage to roofs, siding, and trees from the wind gusts. [4]
Thunderstorm Warning in Eastern Colorado
A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect until 1:45 a.m. MDT for northwestern Kit Carson County in east central Colorado. [5] At 1:07 a.m. MDT, a severe thunderstorm was located 9 miles north of Flagler, moving southeast at 25 mph. [5] Hazard conditions include 60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail. [5] The source of the hazard information is radar indicated. [5] Impacts include expected hail damage to vehicles and wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees. [5] Locations impacted include Seibert. [5]
Flood Waters Recede in Logan County, Colorado
Flash flooding has ended in Logan County, Colorado, after waters receded and no longer pose a threat. [1] Flood waters have receded. Flooding is no longer expected to pose a threat. [1] Residents should continue to heed any remaining closures. [1]
