Lebanon Strikes Kill Three as Iran Warns of Imminent Retaliation
Israeli forces struck a Hezbollah headquarters in Beirut's southern suburbs on Sunday, killing at least three people and injuring 15 others, prompting Iranian warnings of imminent retaliation and casting uncertainty over a potential US-Iran peace agreement. The Lebanon strikes followed Hezbollah firing into Israeli territory and immediately triggered statements from Iranian officials that a response from Islamic fighters is imminent.
Israeli Strike Hits Beirut Suburb
The Israel Defense Forces stated the strike targeted a headquarters used by Hezbollah to plan attacks against Israeli civilians and troops in southern Lebanon, in response to Hezbollah firing into Israeli territory. [1] Lebanon's National News Agency reported that the attack in the Dahieh district killed at least three people and injured 15 others. [1] Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz said in a joint statement that Israel will not tolerate firing into its territory. [1] Lebanon's Health Ministry said the strike on the Ghobeiry area killed three people, including two women, and wounded 16 others according to a preliminary toll. [3] The Israel Defense Forces described the action as a precise strike against Hezbollah infrastructure. [3]
Iran Issues Strong Retaliation Warnings
Iranian officials including Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and military deputy Mohammad-Jafar Asadi warned that the attack would trigger a severe response from Tehran, with the Supreme National Security Council stating a response from Islamic fighters is imminent. [1] Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said on social media that Israel's new aggression against Beirut once again demonstrated that the United States lacks either the will or the ability to fulfil its commitments. [1] Mohammad-Jafar Asadi said in an interview that these crimes will not go unanswered. [1] Iran's Supreme National Security Council warned of an imminent response, stating that the Lebanon is our life and the violation of the lines red of the Islamic Republic will not be tolerated. [5] Iranian officials pushed back on claims that a memorandum of understanding would be signed immediately, while maintaining that an agreement had never been closer. [2]
Trump Urges Restraint as Deal Looms
US President Donald Trump expressed frustration with the strike, stating it should not have happened especially as a US-Iran memorandum of understanding appeared close, and urged all sides including Israel and Hezbollah to stand down to preserve prospects for regional peace including in Lebanon. [1] Trump wrote on Truth Social that the attack in Beirut should not have happened, particularly on a special day when the sides are so close to a Peace Deal with Iran. [1] He added that all sides should stand down because the agreement could bring peace to the region, including to Lebanon. [1] Trump told Axios that Netanyahu has no judgment and that he is very unhappy with the attack in Beirut. [2] Israeli media reported that the country's security cabinet would convene in a fortified bunker amid concerns over potential Iranian missile attacks. [3]
Context of Recent Escalations
The strike follows earlier Israeli actions in southern Lebanon this month that led to Iranian missile attacks on Israel, marking the most serious escalation since an April ceasefire, and comes as Iran insists any US deal must end hostilities on all fronts including Lebanon. [1] The last time Israel struck the Beirut suburbs a week ago, it set off the most serious escalation of fighting between Iran and Israel since the tenuous ceasefire took hold April 7. [2] A final draft of the memorandum of understanding covered issues from Tehran's nuclear work to reopening the Strait of Hormuz and US waivers on oil sanctions, with a final deal to be discussed in the 60 days following agreement. [2] Iran's Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said Friday night that the signing of a MoU with the United States to end the war could take place within the next few days. [1]
International Condemnation and Alerts
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned the strikes at this crucial moment and called for maximum restraint from all parties. [4] Guterres said the attacks took place despite the ceasefire and at a moment when the United States and Iran are expected to reach an agreement that will pave the way toward a peaceful solution. [5] He urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint in this crucial moment. [5] Israel's police commissioner ordered heightened alert levels nationwide, while the military said air raid sirens had sounded across parts of northern Israel. [3] The IDF said it is preparing for possible fire into Israel within hours and remains on high alert. [1]
Hezbollah and Southern Lebanon Actions
Hezbollah said it had responded by launching rockets at concentrations of Israeli troops and military vehicles near Kfartebnit and carrying out a third strike on the southern outskirts of Majdal Zoun. [3] Israeli forces also expanded operations across southern Lebanon with air strikes and artillery shelling targeting several towns, including Srifa, Choukin, Nabatieh al-Fawqa, and areas around Kfartebnit. [3] Hezbollah accused Israel of escalating attacks after issuing evacuation orders covering 24 towns and villages south of the Zahrani River. [3] Shelling struck the outskirts of Smaiyeh and Deir Qanoun Ras al-Ain near Tyre. [3]
What to watch next: Iranian officials have stated that the response of the combatants of Islam is imminent, while US and Iranian sides continue to monitor developments around the proposed memorandum of understanding that would extend a ceasefire to include Lebanon.
